Guest imperialdata Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Hi. I have a '98 Seat Alhambra TDi (Galaxy clone). Ever since I have had the car, the engine cuts on maximum acceleration. Usually a quick ignition off and on resets the fault. Last time it didn't! I suspect the throttle potentiometer. I've taken it off and had a peek (have done electrics/electronics for 20+ years). Looks OK inside but I have no way of calibrating it. This seems to be done by sliding the body around. Anyone got ideas of resistance readings I need to see? Also, anyone know if these symptoms are something other than the throttle pot? Cheers in advance Dave Quote
seatkid Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 I think you need to read the following thread particularly toward the end. It's very likely to do with vacuum control pipes associated with the turbo and boost control. Quote
Guest imperialdata Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Looked at the thread but not sure how to test the maf on a car that doesn't start. Any ideas? Have the Haynes manual for the Galaxy but no info in there. Quote
seatkid Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 Its not the MAF! Are you saying that your car won't start? If so, did this happen after messing about with the throttle position sensor? Please describe the fault in more detail. Does the engine rev at all? Is it power that is lost when driving? Or does the revs drop and stay at idle? Or what? Quote
Guest imperialdata Posted September 6, 2005 Report Posted September 6, 2005 See my first post. Car ALWAYS cut out if accelerator was put to the floor. Always restarted first time. No other hesitation/power loss in normal driving. Oil/petrol levels OK Was driving downhill, came to a nice 'chicane' style island. Booted it at the exit from the island. Engine died. Coasted to the side of the road. Tried to restart, no joy. Engine cranks fine. No power to diesel valve (should I have a voltage when ignition is turned on?). Suspected throttle pot but removed it to have a look/clean and no difference. Tempted by the cables on sale on Ebay to diagnose it via laptop and VAG-COM. Have a Carbaby OBD code reader which shows no fault. Let it 'reset' but still no joy. Quote
Guest imperialdata Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Currently have 5 beeps when trying to start the car (after cranking). The car still refuses to start despite all glow plugs coming on and the injectors dosing fuel. The cambelt is fine. Anyone know what this beeping means? Quote
seatkid Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Faulty crankshaft position sensor. Its not squirting at the correct time! (Sounds like me...) Its located down at the front of the engine low down and to the right. Try a search for further info, check wiring before you change the sensor. Also a flat battery can give the same symptoms...so check your battery first! Quote
Masked Marauder Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Slipped crank pully? Or injection sensor? That would give the beeps too. Quote
